US announces death of
pilot in attack in Baghdad Thursday.
In a dispatch posted at 3:33pm
Baghdad time Friday afternoon, the Association of Muslim Scholars of
Iraq (AMSI) reported that the US military had admitted that an American
pilot had been killed when a bomb exploded by a US Marine patrol in
Baghdad on Thursday.
US pours troops into
Madinat as-Sadr district of Baghdad starting Thursday afternoon in
preparation for offensive of raids and arrests targeting anti-occupation
Jaysh al-Mahdi militiamen.
In a dispatch posted on its Arabic
website at 9:59am Friday morning Beijing time (5:59am in Baghdad), the
Xinhua News Agency reported that US forces increased their
presence in the Madinat as-Sadr area of Baghdad – the low-income
district that is a major stronghold of the anti-occupation Jaysh al-Mahdi
militia. The increasing American presence was reportedly in preparation
for a major US drive to carry out searches for weapons and “wanted
persons” in the district following the failure of the Iraqi regime’s
drive against the Jaysh al-Mahdi last week.
Xinhua reported a source in
the Iraqi government Interior Ministry as saying that US tanks and other
vehicles began to deploy in the neighborhoods of Madinat as-Sadr on
Thursday afternoon. The source said that the Americans’ campaigns of
searches and arrests had not yet begun and that US forces were still
flowing into the area.
Bomb explodes by US patrol
in western Baghdad Thursday.
In a dispatch posted on its Arabic
website at 9:59am Friday morning Beijing time (5:59am in Baghdad), the
Xinhua News Agency reported that a bomb had exploded by a US
patrol near a fuel station in the al-Bayya‘ section of western Baghdad –
an area where there are many followers of anti-occupation Shi‘i
religious leader Muqtada as-Sadr.
Xinhua reported that there
was no information on the nature or extent of casualties in the Thursday
bombing because US forces immediately closed off the area.
Murder spree continues:
two more bodies found dumped in Baghdad Thursday.
In a dispatch posted on its Arabic
website at 9:59am Friday morning Beijing time (5:59am in Baghdad), the
Xinhua News Agency reported that Iraqi police recovered the
unidentified bodies of two murder victims that had been dumped in
Baghdad streets Thursday. Xinhua reported that the bullet-ridden
bodies showed signs of having been tortured.

Belt bomber attack kills
20 at funeral in as-Sa‘diyah, Diyala Province, Friday morning.
In a dispatch posted on its Arabic
website at 3:49pm Friday afternoon Beijing time (11:49am in Baghdad),
the Xinhua News Agency reported that an attacker wearing an
explosive belt blew himself up at the funeral of an Iraqi government
policeman in as-Sa‘diyah, 95km northeast of Baghdad, on Friday morning.
Xinhua reported a source in
the Iraqi Interior Ministry as saying that a man wearing an explosive
belt mingled into a group of mourners in the Hamrin Cemetery who were
paying their last respects to a member of the Iraqi government police
who had been killed on Thursday. The man then blew himself up in the
middle of the crowd.
In a dispatch posted at 4:56pm in
Beijing (12:56pm in Baghdad), Xinhua reported Lieutenant Colonel
‘Ali Salim of the Diyala Province police as saying that as of that hour,
the toll in the attack was 20 dead, most of them relatives and friends
of the deceased, and 30 people wounded.
Lieutenant Colonel Salim said that
victims were rushed to hospitals in as-Sa‘diyah and the provincial
capital of Ba‘qubah, and that the most severe cases were taken to US
military hospitals in the area for treatment.

Bomb kills policeman in
al-Mawsil Thursday.
In a dispatch posted on its Arabic
website at 9:47am Friday morning Beijing time (5:47am in Baghdad), the
Xinhua News Agency reported that a bomb exploded by an Iraqi
police patrol at the Kazim al-Khayyat intersection to the west of
al-Mawsil, 420km northwest of Baghdad, on Thursday.

In a dispatch posted on its Arabic
website at 9:47am Friday morning Beijing time (5:47am in Baghdad), the
Xinhua News Agency reported that a bomb exploded by an Iraqi
government police patrol in the al-Wahdah neighborhood in southern al-Mawsil,
420km northwest of Baghdad, on Thursday.
Wounded policeman foils
kidnap attempt.
In a dispatch posted on its Arabic
website at 9:47am Friday morning Beijing time (5:47am in Baghdad), the
Xinhua News Agency reported that armed men attempted to abduct a
policeman in the al-Yarmuk neighborhood of western al-Mawsil, 420km
northwest of Baghdad, on Thursday.

Casualties reported in US
helicopter assault on district in al-Basrah Friday.
In a dispatch posted at 10:05pm
Baghdad time Friday night, the Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq
(AMSI) reported that US helicopter gun ships opened fire on people in
al-Basrah on Friday.
The AMSI reported a military
spokesman for the British occupation forces in al-Basrah as saying that
a US helicopter opened fire on what he dubbed “extremists” in the city
in response to a request issued by the US-installed Iraqi regime.
The attack took place in the
al-Hayyaniyah district of al-Basrah, an area that was the scene of
fighting between the anti-occupation Jaysh al-Mahdi militia and
US-backed government forces last week.
Eyewitnesses said that there had been casualties in the attack that damaged a number of houses.
