Sadr Movement official
threatens end of truce if US offensive continues.
In a dispatch posted at 4:20pm
Baghdad time Saturday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported
that Salman al-Furayji, Director of the Office of Muqtada as-Sadr in
Madintat as-Sadr, threatened to cancel the cease fire imposed by Muqtada
as-Sadr if the US-run offensive against the Sadr Movement continues.
Yaqen reported al-Furayji
said that they obey orders of Muqtada as-Sadr, but that if military
operations against them continues, the cease-fire will be cancelled for
sure.
Responding to calls by the US and
the regime to dissolve the Jaysh al-Mahdi militia, al-Furayji said:
“Everybody’s demanding that we dissolve the Jaysh al-Mahdi, but at the
same time as we all know they have militias too. Therefore, the
dissolution of those militias is the basic condition for the dissolution
of the Jaysh al-Mahdi and without that nobody has the right to demand
that of us.”
Al-Furayji said that the Iraqi
regime’s Ministry of the Interior and Ministry of Defense are in fact
militias operating in military uniforms but taking their orders from
political parties – a reference to the fact that the Badr Brigade
militia and other such groups that took part in the US invasion of Iraq
in 2003, have formed the backbone of the American-installed regime’s
security forces.
