Baghdad.

US announces death of Marine from wounds, three years
after his injury.

In a dispatch posted at 2:13pm Baghdad time Saturday
afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that the US
military announced Saturday that a Marine who had
suffered severely disfiguring burns and underwent 100
surgical operations in the ensuing 17 months has
finally died of his wounds.

Yaqen reported that the Marine was severely wounded
when his Humvee crashed on the way to the military
camp in ar-Ramadi, 110km west of Baghdad, on 21
February 2005.  The 22-year-old Marine was burned over
95 percent of his body and underwent long and
extensive treatment in Texas in the US before finally
dying on 11 April due to complications in one of the
surgeries.

US aircraft blasts hospital, wounding 20 patients and
staff; 25 people killed, 60 more wounded in continuing
American offensive against defiant, impoverished
Baghdad district.

In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 6:40pm
Saturday afternoon Beijing time (2:40pm in Baghdad),
the Xinhua News Agency reported that 25 people had
been killed and more than 60 others injured in the
continued US offensive against the anti-occupation
Jaysh al-Mahdi in the impoverished Madinat as-Sadr
district of Baghdad since Friday.

Xinhua reported a source in the Iraqi government
police as saying that the fighting, which began Friday
night, between US troops and Jaysh al-Mahdi fighters,
grew in intensity when the Jaysh al-Mahdi fired six
rockets from the area around as-Sadr Hospital in the
center of Madinat as-Sadr at the US forces.  US
artillery and helicopters then fired their own rockets
into the quarter.

The source said that preliminary figures indicated
that in addition to the 25 people killed and 60 more
wounded in the American attack, numerous homes and
shops had been destroyed.

Qasim ‘Abd al-Hadi, the Information Director for the
Department of Health in the Baghdad district of
ar-Rusafah told the press that American aircraft
“blasted the as-Sadr Hospital on Saturday, wounding 20
patients and hospital staff members.”  ‘Abd al-Hadi
added that nine ambulances and about 40 private cars
were also damaged in the US raid.

Since late March the US has been prosecuting an
offensive against the impoverished Madinat as-Sadr
district of Baghdad, a stronghold of support for the
anti-occupation Jaysh al-Mahdi militia, loyal to Shi‘i
religious leader Muqtada as-Sadr.  The American drive
is seen as part of the US preparations for an eventual
American attack on Iran.
