Iraqi regime troops attack Jaysh al-Mahdi in raids in
southeastern Baghdad.
In a dispatch posted at 9:15pm Baghdad time Wednesday
evening, the Yaqen News Agency reported that Iraqi
government troops attempted to launch raids and
searches in the al-Amin neighborhood of southeastern
Baghdad on Wednesday, sparking a battle with the
defending anti-occupation Jaysh al-Mahdi militia.
Yaqen reported a source in the Baghdad Operations
Command as saying that eight Jaysh al-Mahdi militiamen
and one Iraqi army soldier were killed in the fighting
and another 10 soldiers were wounded in the battle.
The government spokesman claimed that regime forces
also disarmed seven bombs and recovered 55 Kalashnikov
assault rifles during their raid. The source said
that the wounded were taken to a nearby hospital for
treatment.
Health situation in Madinat as-Sadr dire as US
continues blockade, offensive.
In a dispatch posted at 12:25pm Baghdad time midday
Wednesday, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a
member of the Health and Environment Committee of the
Iraqi Parliament reported that the health situation in
besieged Madinat as-Sadr was worrisome after weeks
suffering from a US blockade and offensive.
Yaqen reported Azad ‘Umar Bamarani as saying that the
health situation in the district was complex and
worrisome and noted that the hospitals and clinics in
the blockaded area lack the most basic medical
supplies for dealing with a critical situation. There
is a severe shortage of medicines, he said, as a
result of the continuing US offensive against the
district since late March.
Bamarani said that he would be holding a meeting with
the Iraqi regime’s Minister of Health, Salih
al-Hasnawi to discuss the crisis in Madinat as-Sadr.
“I was a part of a parliamentary delegation that
visited Madinat as-Sadr,” Bamarani said, “and saw with
my own eyes the critical nature of the conditions
suffered by the district as a result of the military
operations there.”
Bamarani called on the regime to intervene urgently to
save the deteriorating health situation in the area.
Since late March, the US has been carrying out an
offensive against Madinat as-Sadr, an impoverished
Baghdad district, a stronghold of support for
anti-occupation Shi‘i religious leader Muqtada
as-Sadr. The attack is regarded as a part of US
preparations for an eventual American attack on Iran.
