Eight killed, 18 wounded as US continues offensive against impoverished Baghdad district. In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 5:40pm Thursday morning Beijing time (1:40pm in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that at least eight people were killed and more than 18 others wounded in Thursday’s continued US offensive against the anti-occupation Jaysh al-Mahdi militia in eastern Baghdad. Xinhua reported a source in the regime’s security forces as saying that fierce fighting raged during the night and until early Thursday morning between the Jaysh al-Mahdi and the attacking Americans and Iraqi regime forces. Local eyewitnesses reported that the Iraqi government troops used loudspeakers to tell residents of the impoverished Madinat as-Sadr district to leave their homes and head to tent camps set up for them by the regime. The US and Iraqi government forces hope to use maximum firepower against the anti-occupation forces and wish to isolate the militiamen from their popular constituency. The regime set up the refugee camps near the ash-Sha‘b International Stadium and the Industrial Club Sports Stadium. On Tuesday a source in the Iraqi regime police reported that dozens of residents of Madinat as-Sadr had begun fleeing from the American offensive to the camps. Since late March the US has been waging an offensive against the anti-occupation Jaysh al-Mahdi militia in apparent preparation for an eventual American attack on Iran. Yaqen reported a source who refused to be identified as saying that at that moment Iraqi regime troops were surrounding the radio station in the al-Habibiyah district of eastern Baghdad and were preventing employees from entering the building, keeping the station from going on the air. The move parallels the continuing US offensive against the Sadr Movement, an armed offensive that is believed to be in preparation for an eventual American attack on Iran. Xinhua reported a source in the ad-Dulu‘iyah police as saying that al-Jabburi was attending a security meeting together with Lieutenant Colonel Muhammad Khalid, the commander of the city police and Marwan Mut‘ab, the local administrative chief. The purpose of the meeting was to study the state of security and services in ad-Dulu‘iyah. After the meeting concluded and the attendees dispersed, a person wearing an explosive belt attacked the column in which al-Mulla Nazim al-Jabburi, the Commander of the “Awakening” forces in the city. The explosion slightly wounded al-Jabburi, who was taken to hospital. Later, al-Jabburi said that the attack bore the fingerprints of the al-Qa‘idah organization. He promised that the regime would drive al-Qa‘idah out of its hiding places. Xinhua noted that al-Jabburi had been one of the most prominent al-Qa‘idah commanders in Iraq until he quit the organization last year and formed a unit of the “Awakening” tribal forces in ad-Dulu‘iyah, with the aim of combating the fundamentalist organization, which has killed dozens of local residents.
