Baghdad. US reports death of one American soldier, wounding of five more in gun battle at meeting with local Iraqi municipal councilor southeast of Baghdad early Monday. In a dispatch posted at 10:40pm Baghdad time Monday night, the Yaqen News Agency reported that the US military announced on Monday that a US patrol shot and killed a member of the local council near the Salman Bak area, 35km southeast of Baghdad. Yaqen reported a US spokesman as saying that Ra’id Hammud ‘Ujayl was killed when US troops shot him. The US said that preliminary reports also indicated that one American soldier was killed in the incident and five other US troops wounded in the clash that led to the death of the local council member ‘Ujayl. The source said that the incident took place at 1am and that an investigation was under way. Salah ad-Din Province. Balad. Bomb kills two tribal policemen near Balad midday Monday. In a dispatch posted at 5:40pm Baghdad time Monday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a homemade bomb exploded by a patrol of Iraqi tribal “Awakening” police north of Balad, 90km north of Baghdad, at midday Monday. Ninwa Province. Al-Mawsil. Gunmen kill student, policeman in al-Mawsil. In a dispatch posted at 11:12pm Baghdad time Monday night, the Yaqen News Agency reported that gunmen shot and killed a university student and a policeman in two separate incidents in al-Mawsil, 420km northwest of Baghdad – recently a center of al-Qa‘idah activity. Yaqen reported gunmen shot and killed a university student at midday after the youth came out of a university building. In a separate incident, a source in the al-Mawsil police said that gunmen in a late-model car killed a policeman on his way to work in the Bab Sinjar area of western al-Mawsil Monday afternoon. The officer was a commissioner in a police investigation office. The source said that the officer was in civilian dress at the time, as he was returning from leave. Bomb wounds three Iraqi soldiers in al-Mawsil. In a dispatch posted at 12:31pm Baghdad time Monday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a group of Iraqi army sappers were trying to disarm a bomb found in the city of al-Mawsil, 420km northwest of Baghdad on Monday when the device exploded. Yaqen reported a source in the army as saying that the bomb, which had been planted in al-Mawsil’s ar-Rashidiyah district, severely wounded Major Fakhir Barwari – who lost an arm and a leg - and two of his soldiers. Since 10 May, US and Iraqi regime forces have been carrying out an offensive against al-Qa‘idah in al-Mawsil. Wasit Province. Al-Kut. Mortar shell wounds woman in al-Kut. In a dispatch posted at 12:07pm Baghdad time Monday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a woman was wounded when a mortar shell of unknown origins landed in the middle of the an-Nasr neighborhood of western al-Kut, 180km southeast of Bahgdad. Yaqen reported a source in the Wasit Province police as saying that a heavy 120mm mortar shell exploded in western al-Kut, wounding a woman who was taken to hospital for treatment. A private car was also damaged in the explosion. The source said that the shell was probably intended for the American military Camp Delta located west of al-Kut, but fell short of its target.
