Al-Anbar Province.
Rawah.

Car bomber blasts into checkpoint manned by US, Iraqi regime troops west of Rawah.

In a dispatch posted at 9:37am Baghdad time Sunday morning, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a car bomber blasted into a checkpoint jointly manned by US and Iraqi government troops west of Rawah, 315km northwest of Baghdad.

Yaqen reported that the attack took place on the outskirts of the village of as-Samsiyah, 10km west of Rawah.  Witnesses told Yaqen that there were “many” casualties among the US and Iraqi regime troops, indicating that two US Medevac helicopters rushed to the scene and evacuated casualties to the ‘Ayn al-Asad base, one of the largest American bases in western Iraq, located near al-Baghdadi.

The witnesses said that ambulances from the western Iraqi cities of Rawah, ‘Anah, and al-Qa’im also hurried to respond to the attack, evacuating the Iraqi government casualties.

Yaqen reported that neither US nor Iraqi government sources were commenting on the reports of the attack as of the time of reporting.  All roads to the area had been closed and a campaign of raids and searches was underway.

The attack, the first car bomber assault on a military position in months, appeared to be another sign of the resurgence of al-Qa‘idah in al-Anbar Province, which had been largely pacified for two years by the US with the help of the tribal “Awakening” police contingents.

In a dispatch posted at 1:25pm Sunday afternoon, Yaqen reported an officer in the Rawah police as saying that the attack killed five US troops and wounded six more of them in addition to damaging a large number of US Humvers and transports.

Baghdad.

Car bomb explodes in western Baghdad as sappers work in vain to disarm it.

In a dispatch posted at 5:15pm Baghdad time Sunday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a car bomb exploded as Iraqi government police sappers worked to defuse it in western Baghdad on Sunday.

Yaqen reported a source in the police as saying that after the car bomb was discovered in the ash-Shurtah Tunnel in western Baghdad, the area was cordoned off and sappers arrived to try to defuse it.  The car exploded before they could complete their work, however, wounding five of the police technicians, all of whom were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Car bomb targets police patrol in northern Baghdad’s ash-Sha‘b district.

In a dispatch posted at 2:53pm Baghdad time Sunday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a car bomb went off by a police patrol in the ash-Sha‘b district of northern Baghdad.

Yaqen reported witnesses as saying that the blast killed three policemen and wounded 12 more of them.  Government security forces then sealed off the area, preventing people from approaching as the wounded were taken to the nearest hospital.

Iraqi regime forces seal off parts of Madinat as-Sadr following clashes between anti-occupation Jaysh al-Mahdi militia and Iraqi regime troops Saturday night.

In a dispatch posted at 11:55am Baghdad time Sunday morning, the Yaqen News Agency reported that Iraqi government troops sealed off nine districts of the impoverished Madinat as-Sadr district of eastern Baghdad – a part of the Iraqi capital regarded as a stronghold of support for the anti-occupation Shi‘i religious leader Muqtada as-Sadr.

Yaqen reported witnesses as saying that the security cordon around the districts followed armed clashes reported on Saturday-Sunday night between Iraqi government forces and the Jaysh al-Mahdi militia – the armed wing of the anti-occupation Sadr Movement.

One witness reported that government troops sealed off areas 35, 36, 38, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, and 75, after fighting erupted there following the arrest of ‘Abbas ‘Abd al-‘Al a prominent commander of the Jaysh al-Mahdi, and is nephew Diya’.  Light and medium weapons were used in the fighting, which prompted local residents to remain indoors.

Witnesses said that government military vehicles closed all entrances and exits to the areas Sunday morning, banning all motorized and pedestrian traffic into and out of those areas, preventing many people from getting to work in the one end of Madinat as-Sadr where the districts are located.  The blockade was still in place as of the time of reporting.

Non-combat death first reported US fatality in July.

In a dispatch posted at 9:53am Baghdad time Sunday morning, the Yaqen News Agency reported that the US military announced its first death in the month of July, describing the casualty as due to a “non-combat” incident.

Yaqen reported a communiqué issued by the US as saying that the death occurred on Saturday, but offered no further details, other than to indicate that it was under investigation.
