·    Bomb kills one US soldier, wounds four more in western Baghdad Tuesday.

·    Iraqi government guards open fire on workers picking up paychecks in northern Baghdad, wounding 12.

·    US troops raid home, kill former major in Iraqi army near ash-Sharuqat Monday night.

Abu Ghurayb.

Resistance group claims it fired one rocket at US camp in Abu Ghurayb.

In a dispatch posted at 8:30pm Baghdad time Tuesday evening, the Yaqen News Agency reported that the Iraqi resistance group known as the Brigades of the 1920 Revolution had announced that its fighters had fired an S5K rocket at the US military installation in Abu Ghurayb, 30km west of Baghdad.

Resistance group claims attack on US Humvee in Baghdad.

In a dispatch posted at 5:43pm Baghdad time Tuesday morning, the Yaqen News Agency reported that the Iraqi resistance group known as the Brigades of the 1920 Revolution, a constituent member organization of the Jihad and Change Front, had announced that its fighters had destroyed a US Humvee.

Bomb kills one US soldier, wounds four more in western Baghdad Tuesday.

In a dispatch posted at 4:04pm Baghdad time Tuesday morning, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a bomb went off by a US military patrol in the west Baghdad district of al-‘Amiriyah on Tuesday.

Yaqen reported the US army as admitting that the blast killed one American soldier and wounded four more of them.  It was the second fatality among the US forces that the American occupation regime had reported for the current month of July.  The American statement indicated that five US troops were initially wounded by the bomb, but that one of the five had died in hospital following surgery.

Witnesses in al-‘Amiriyah said that US forces closed off the area to cars and pedestrians for an hour and a half following the attack.  During that time, residents were not allowed out even to go to their places of work.

Iraqi government guards open fire on workers picking up paychecks in northern Baghdad, wounding 12.

In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 6:08pm Tuesday afternoon Beijing time (1:08pm in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that guards of the Social Protection Department opened fire on crowds of workers gathered to pick up their paychecks in the al-Waziriyah district of northern Baghdad on Tuesday morning.

Xinhua reported a source in the government police as saying that the government security men wounded 12 workers.  Ambulances then arrived to transport the victims to hospitals for treatment.  The troops also closed off the area to prevent further clashes, maintaining that the shooting was probably “accidental.”

Tikrit.

Bomb kills bodyguard of police chief in Tikrit.

In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 4:41pm Tuesday afternoon Beijing time (11:41am in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that a bomb exploded by a vehicle being driven by a bodyguard of the chief of police for Salah ad-Din province in Tikrit, 180km north of Baghdad, early on Tuesday morning.

Xinhua reported a source in the Tikrit city police as saying that the blast, on 40 Street in Tikrit, killed the bodyguard in his private car on the spot.

Ash-Sharuqat.

US troops raid home, kill former major in Iraqi army near ash-Sharuqat Monday night.

In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 4:41pm Tuesday afternoon Beijing time (11:41am in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that US troops carried out an operation in the ash-Shaykh Hamad area of ash-Sharuqat, 250km north of Baghdad, on Monday night.

Xinhua reported a source in the Tikrit city police as saying that the American troops raided the home of a former major in the Iraqi army during the time of President Saddam Hussein.  For reasons unknown to the source, the US troops killed the veteran Iraqi major in his home.  They US troops drove the family out of their home and then burned it down.

Balad Ruz.

Bomb wounds three policemen west of Balad Ruz.

In a dispatch posted at 11:50am Baghdad time Tuesday morning, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a bomb exploded by a patrol of provincial police on the main road linking Balad Ruz, 65km northeast of Baghdad, with the town of Kan‘an, about 20km to the west.

Ba‘qubah.

Bomb in ladies’ garment store in Ba‘qubah kills one woman, wounds 16 others.

In a dispatch posted at 10:06am Baghdad time Tuesday morning, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a bomb that exploded in a local market in Ba‘qubah, 65km northeast of Baghdad, had targeted a store selling women’s garments.

Yaqen reported a spokesperson for the US forces as saying that contrary to reports issued on Monday, the explosion had not been caused by a woman belt bomber but by a bomb.  That explosion killed one Iraqi woman and wounded 16 others.

Kirkuk.

Oil Installation policeman severely wounded in Kirkuk bomb attack.

In a dispatch posted at 3pm Baghdad time Tuesday morning, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a bomb went off by a patrol of Oil Installation Guard police near the Kirkuk courthouse on al-Awqaf Street in the city, which is located 250km north of Baghdad.

Yaqen reported Brigadier General Sarhad Qadir, the Police Chief for Regions and Areas in Kirkuk, as saying that the blast severely wounded one policeman and three civilians – one of those a woman.  The explosion also inflicted damage on the area where it occurred.

Al-Mawsil.

Bomb wounds policeman in eastern al-Mawsil Tuesday.

In a dispatch posted at 9:25pm Baghdad time Tuesday night, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a bomb went off by a patrol of Ninwa Province police in the al-Ma‘arid area of eastern al-Mawsil, 420km northwest of Baghdad on Tuesday.

Bomb explodes in western al-Mawsil during attempt to disarm it.

In a dispatch posted at 9:25pm Baghdad time Tuesday night, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a bomb went off by a patrol of Iraqi regime police were trying to disarm a bomb in the al-Yarmuk area of western al-Mawsil.

Four contractors working for US occupation forces killed in bomb attack in al-Mawsil Monday afternoon.

In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 3:19pm Tuesday afternoon Beijing time (10:19am in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that a bomb had exploded by a convoy hauling provisions for US forces south of al-Mawsil, (which is 420km northwest of Baghdad), Monday afternoon.

Xinhua reported a spokesperson for the US military as saying that the bomb exploded by a US convoy about 23km south of al-Mawsil at about 3:30pm local time Monday afternoon.  The blast killed four contractors (working with the US occupation forces) and wounded eight more of them, the American spokesperson said, without providing information on the identities of the contractor, other than to say that “local Iraqis were the target of multiple explosions in northern Iraq.”

Xinhua noted that security guards on contract to the Americans guard some convoys transporting provisions for the US forces in Iraq.  Some of those contract workers are Iraqis; others are of other nationalities.
