Al-Anbar Province.
‘Anah.
Bomb reportedly targets US military vehicle near ‘Anah.
In a dispatch posted at 4:45pm Baghdad time Sunday afternoon, the Yaqen
News Agency reported that a high-explosive bomb went off by a US
military patrol near ‘Anah, 300km northwest of Baghdad.
Yaqen reported witnesses as saying that the attack took place on Water
Project Road south of the city. Fire trucks and Iraqi police together
with tribal “Awakening” police rushed to the scene and surrounded the
area, after which mass arrests of local residents were carried out.
The last week has witnessed an increase in attacks on US and Iraqi
regime forces in the areas of Rawah, al-Hadithah, and ‘Anah – an area
that has largely been passive for a year and a half thanks to
cooperation between local tribes and American occupation forces against
the al-Qa‘idah organization. In recent weeks al-Qa‘idah has reportedly
been reviving its activities and improving its relations with tribes in
western Iraq.
Al-Fallujah.
Bombs kills four policemen in al-Fallujah Sunday morning.
In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 4pm Sunday afternoon
Beijing time (11am in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that two
bombs had exploded one after the other in the middle of al-Fallujah,
60km west of Baghdad on Sunday morning.
Xinhua reported a source in the Iraqi government police as saying that
one bomb went off in front of the home of an officer in the police
located in the al-Jumhuriyah neighborhood of the city. The attack took
place as a convoy was preparing to escort the officer from his home to
his office. Four members of the patrol were killed in that explosion.
Then after a crowd had gathered on the scene, a second bomb went off
moments later, wounding eight people, four of them policemen. Several
nearby houses were damaged in the explosions.
After a year and a half during which al-Fallujah and most of al-Anbar
Province had been largely quiet, the al-Qa‘idah organization has been
attempting to resume activities in the area in recent weeks.

In a dispatch posted at 12:45pm Baghdad time Sunday afternoon, the Yaqen
News Agency reported that a bomb had exploded by a police patrol near
the Sunni north Baghdad district of al-A‘zamiyah.
Yaqen reported a source in the government police as saying that the
bomb, which had been planted by the side of a road to al-A‘zamiyah,
wounded three of the troops in the patrol. The government forces then
cordoned off the area and transported the wounded to a nearby hospital.
Bomb wounds four in eastern Baghdad Sunday morning.
In a dispatch posted at 11:15am Baghdad time Sunday morning, the Yaqen
News Agency reported that a bomb had exploded on Palestine Street in
eastern Baghdad on Sunday.
Yaqen reported a source in the government police as saying that the
blast wounded four people, but did not indicate whether the explosion
had been targeted on US or Iraqi regime forces. The source only added
that the injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Salah ad-Din Province.
Ad-Dulu‘iyah.
Police officer, civilian killed in attack in ad-Dulu‘iyah late Saturday
night.
In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 3:08pm Sunday afternoon
Beijing time (10:08am in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that
armed men had assassinated a police lieutenant in ad-Dulu ‘iyah, 97km
north of Baghdad at 11:30pm Saturday night.
Xinhua reported a source in the police as saying that the attackers
killed Lieutenant Muhannad Fayyad ‘Ali Salim in front of his home as he
was returning from work. A civilian was also killed in the attack and
three other civilians were wounded. All were sitting in front of their
home at the time of the attack and belonged to one family.

In a dispatch posted at 5:55pm Baghdad time Sunday afternoon, the Yaqen
News Agency reported that a bomb exploded on the main road to al-Wajihiyah
in the al-Miqdadiyah area, 85km northeast of Baghdad.
Yaqen reported Major General Ghanin al-Qurayshi, the Commander of the
Diyala provincial police, as saying that the blast killed three people.
Buhriz.

In a dispatch posted at 5:55pm Baghdad time Sunday afternoon, the Yaqen
News Agency reported that a bomb had exploded in the Bazayiz area near
Buhriz, 60km northeast of Baghdad.
Yaqen reported Major General Ghanin al-Qurayshi, Commander of the Diyala
Province police, as saying that one person had been injured in the
blast.
Ninwa Province.
Al-Mawsil.
Shabak minority representative accuses US-backed Kurdish separatist
party of Saturday’s murder of Shabak activist near al-Mawsil.
In a dispatch posted at 2:05pm Baghdad time Sunday afternoon, the Yaqen
News Agency reported that Hanin Qadu, representative of the Shabak
minority in the Iraqi Parliament accused the Kurdistan Democratic Party
(KDP), a US-backed Kurdish separatist party led by Mas‘ud Barzani, of
being responsible for the murder of a member of the Shabak Democratic
Coalition in al-Mawsil on Saturday.
Yaqen reported Qadu as saying that the KDP was responsible for the
killing of Mal‘ab ‘Abbas Kazim, member of the Political Bureau of the
Shabak Democratic Coalition, who was gunned down near Ba‘shiqah, 30km
east of al-Mawsil on Saturday.
Qadu said that Mal‘ab Kazim had been active in opposing the Kurdisation
of the Ninwa area and of its annexation by the Kurdistan separatist
region in northern Iraq. He said that Kazim had received telephone
threats from the KDP, demanding that he stop opposing their expansionist
drive. In response, Kazim had initiated legal action against the KDP
prior to his murder.
On Saturday, Yaqen reported a source in the provincial government as
saying that gunmen shot and killed the member of the Shabak ethnic
minority near the village of ‘Umar Qaji in the Ba‘shiqah area, 30km east
of al-Mawsil. Yaqen noted that Ba‘shiqah is an ethnically mixed area
where “Christians, Yazidis, Arabs, Kurds, and Shabak reside.”
The Shabak are a minority listed as numbering 80,000 in the official
1977 census and resident in the Ninwa area. A deputy representing the
Shabak in the US-installed parliament, Hanin al-Qadu, asserts that the
minority numbers between 300,000 and 400,000 persons.
The Shabak speak a language similar to Zakaki and Kurdish and many
follow a religion that reportedly is similar to that of the Yazidis.
Other Shabaks are Muslim and practice a version of Sufism.
Since the US invasion of Iraq in 2003 American-backed Kurdish separatist
parties have tried to assert control over Shabak areas with a view to
annexing them to an eventual Kurdish state. The Democratic Shabak
Coalition seeks separate representation for the Shabak community and its
members have been the target of repression by Kurdish separatist
Peshmergah gunmen on occasion.
The KDP is headed by Mas‘ud Barzani, currently the US-installed
President of the separatist Kurdistan region created by US occupation
forces in northern Iraq.
In a dispatch posted at 8:06pm Baghdad time Sunday evening, Yaqen
reported that the KDP had, unsurprisingly, denied involvement in the
murder of the Shabak activist.
Policeman gunned down in front of home in eastern al-Mawsil Saturday
evening.
In a dispatch posted at 10:15am Baghdad time Sunday morning, the Yaqen
News Agency reported that a member of the bodyguard of the governor of
Ninwa Province was killed in an armed attack in al-Mawsil on Saturday
evening.
Yaqen reported a source in the provincial government as saying that
gunmen shot and killed a policeman who serves as one of the governor’s
bodyguards in an attack that took place in front of the policeman’s home
in the ‘Adan neighborhood to the east of al-Mawsil. The policeman was
outside his home when a car drove up, and a man got out who proceeded to
shot the policeman with a pistol.
Since 10 May, the US and its Iraqi regime allies have been waging an
offensive against the al-Qa‘idah organization in al-Mawsil and
surrounding Ninwa Province.
