Baghdad.
US announces “non-combat death” of American Marine in Iraq on Sunday.
In a dispatch posted at 9:52pm Baghdad time Monday night, the
Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq (AMSI) reported that the US
military announced on Monday that an American Marine had died in what it
called a “non-combat incident.”
The AMSI reported the American statement as saying that the death
occurred on Sunday but no further details were revealed.
Three die in explosion at traffic hub in Baghdad midday Monday.
In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 6:50pm Monday afternoon
Beijing time (1:50pm in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that
gunmen in an Opel car tossed a hand grenade at a patrol of traffic
wardens at the Damascus Junction in the al-‘Allawi district of downtown
Baghdad at midday Monday.
Xinhua reported a source in the police as saying three people had been
killed in the explosion, one of them a traffic warden. Another 13
people – four of those traffic wardens – were wounded in the blast.
The source said that the men in the car who hurled the grenade managed
to escape after carrying out their deadly attack, which also damaged
numerous private cars and one police motorcycle on the scene. Also
damaged were several of the vending kiosks that line the al-‘Allawi
parking area, a junction for the arrival and departure of commuters and
travelers between Baghdad and outlying provinces of Iraq.
Police rushed to the scene of the blast, cordoned it off, set about
evacuating the casualties to hospitals, and began an investigation.
Diyala Province.
Ba‘qubah.
Three policemen wounded in bomb attack near Ba‘qubah Monday.
In a dispatch posted at 2:31pm Baghdad time Monday afternoon, the Yaqen
News Agency reported that three members of the US-backed tribal
“Awakening” police were wounded when a bomb exploded by their car on the
main road to the village of al-Mukhifah near Ba‘qubah, 65km northeast of
Baghdad, on Monday.
Yaqen reported a source in the Joint Coordination Center, who asked not
to be identified, as saying that the explosion wounded all four tribal
policemen in varying degrees of severity.
At-Ta’mim/Kirkuk Province.
Kirkuk.
Two high-ranking Iraqi army officers kidnapped south of Kirkuk Monday.
In a dispatch posted at 11:26pm Baghdad time Monday night, the
Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq (AMSI) reported that two
high-ranking Iraqi army officers, one of them a general, had been
abducted on the main road near Jabal Hamrayn south of Kirkuk (which is
250km north of Baghdad).
The AMSI reported Staff Major Shawwan Hammah Gharib as saying that
gunmen abducted the two officers – one of them an adjutant to an Iraqi
army intelligence officer, and the other a general – in the ar-Rashad
area, 35km southwest of Kirkuk at midday Monday. Gharib indicated that
the matter was the subject of an investigation but offered no further
details. The Jabal Hamrin area is a known stronghold of the al-Qa‘idah
organization.
Ninwa Province.
Al-Mawsil.
Bodies of two young women found murdered in eastern al-Mawsil Monday
evening.
In a dispatch posted at 12:07am Baghdad time just after midnight Tuesday
morning, the Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq (AMSI) reported that
Ninwa Province police had recovered the unidentified bodies of two women
who had been murdered and dumped by the side of a road in eastern al-Mawsil,
420km northwest of Baghdad.
The AMSI reported a source in the Ninwa Province police who refused to
be identified as saying that the police discovered the two bodies in the
al-Qadisiyah ath-Thaniyah nistrict of al-Mawsil on Monday evening. Both
young women had been shot to death in the head and chest and were
estimated to be between 16 and 18 years of age. No further details were
available.

surrounding Ninwa Province.
Police, gunmen engage in firefights in al-Mawsil Monday afternoon.
In a dispatch posted at 3pm Baghdad time Monday afternoon, the Yaqen
News Agency reported that armed clashes had erupted between Iraqi regime
security forces and gunmen in the at-Tanak neighborhood of eastern al-Mawsil,
420km northwest of Baghdad.
Yaqen reported a source in the government security forces as saying that
the intermittent fighting was still underway as of the time of reporting
and that one soldier had been killed and four others wounded.
Government troops had completely surrounded the area, but so far no
order to storm in had been issued. The area had never been put under
government control and remained a nest for gunmen and the al-Qa‘idah
organization.
As of the time of reporting, the regime had sent reinforcements into the
area and US forces had also established air cover over the encircled
area.

Police kill gunmen, thwarting belt-bomb attack in al-Mawsil.
In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 4:59pm Monday afternoon
Beijing time (11:59 in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that a
gunman wearing an explosive belt was shot to death by Iraqi regime
police in al-Mawsil, 420km northwest of Baghdad, on Monday.
Xinhua reported a source in the al-Mawsil police as saying that a man
wearing an explosive belt tried to attack a checkpoint manned by
policemen near the Tomb of the Prophet Yunus to the west of the city.
When the man failed to heed their warnings and continued to approach
their outpost, the police suspected his motivation and opened fire,
killing him before he could reach their position. There were no
casualties among the police.

Car bomber slams into police car Sunday night, wounding four.
In a dispatch posted at 10am Baghdad time Monday morning, the Yaqen News
Agency reported that a car bomber drove his vehicle into a police
vehicle on the southwest side of al-Mawsil, 420km northwest of Baghdad
on Sunday night.
Yaqen reported a source in the Ninwa Province Operations Command as
saying that the attack occurred near the entrance to the Fifth Bridge
when a police vehicle headed through the area on its way to a meeting of
the provincial Operations Command. The source, who asked to remain
anonymous, said that four policemen were severely wounded in the car
bomb attack. The policemen were taken to al-Mawsil General Hospital for
treatment.

Tall ‘Abtah.
Five bodies found dumped in Tall ‘Abtah Monday.
In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 4:59pm Monday afternoon
Beijing time (11:59am in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that
a patrol of Iraqi regime police, responding to tips, found the bodies of
five people who had been killed by gunmen in Tall ‘Abtah, 70km southwest
of al-Mawsil in northwestern Iraq on Monday.
Xinhua reported a source in the al-Mawsil police as saying that all the
victims were local residents of the Tall ‘Abtah area and their bodies
were all found in one place. The remains were taken to a morgue from
which their families can retrieve them.
In a dispatch posted at 12:32pm Baghdad time Monday afternoon, the Yaqen
News Agency reported that the forensic medicine department had received
the bodies and that four of them belonged to local shepherds. A source
in the Ninwa Province police told Yaqen that gunmen intercepted the
shepherds as they were driving in a car down the road between Tall
‘Abtah and al-Mahlabiyah. The gunmen opened fire on their car, killing
all four of them on the spot.
Xinhua noted that two days earlier Iraqi army patrols recovered the
bodies of seven residents of Tall ‘Afar, 80km west of al-Mawsil, who had
also been killed by gunmen and dumped.
