·    Bomb targets mercenary convoy in Baghdad before noon Wednesday.

Baghdad.

Gunmen open fire on Iraqi National Guard troops in Baghdad.

In a dispatch posted at 3:55pm Baghdad time Wednesday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that gunmen had opened fire with machineguns on members of the Iraqi National Guard in the Baghdad district of al-Ghazzaliyah.

Yaqen reported witnesses as saying that the attackers shot at a group of National Guards on al-Baddalah Street in al-Ghazzaliyah, wounding a number of them.  Afterwards, the Natioanl Guards launched a campaign of raids and arrests of dozens of local residents in an attempt to find the attackers.

In a dispatch posted at 7pm Baghdad time Wednesday afternoon, Yaqen News Agency reported that one of the National Guardsmen wounded in the attack died of his injuries in hospital hours later.

Bomb reportedly explodes by US patrol on Baghdad bridge Wednesday.

In a dispatch posted at 2:55pm Baghdad time Wednesday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a bomb exploded by a US military patrol near the al-Ghazzaliyah area of Baghdad on Wednesday.

Yaqen reported witnesses as saying that the bomb went off on the bridge linking the Baghdad districts of al-Ghazzaliyah and al-‘Amiriyah, and that an American patrol vehicle was badly damaged in the blast.  Witnesses said they were unable to determine whether the explosion had caused any casualties, because US forces quickly closed off the area.

Government announces death of two gunmen, capture of 96 “suspects” in security operations in previous 24 hours.

In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 6:34pm Wednesday afternoon Beijing time (1:34pm in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that the Iraqi Defense Ministry had announced that its forces had killed two gunmen and arrested 96 “suspects” in operations they carried out in the previous 24 hours.

Xinhua reported a communiqué issued by the Ministry on Wednesday as saying that the government troops also disarmed four bombs and seized quantities of various types of weapons, materiel, and explosive materials.

Xinhua noted that at the present time the Iraqi regime, with US backing, is conducting operations against the pro-Iranian Jaysh al-Mahdi Shi‘i-sectarian militia in al-Basrah Province and the city of al-‘Amarah in southern Iraq, and separate operations against the Sunni-sectarian fundamentalist al-Qa‘idah organization in Ninwa and Diyala Provinces.

Bomb targets mercenary convoy in Baghdad before noon Wednesday.

In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 4:17pm Wednesday afternoon Beijing time (11:17am in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that a bomb exploded by a convoy of foreign mercenary security company vehicles in downtown Baghdad before noon Wednesday.

Xinhua reported a source in the Iraqi police as saying that the bomb went off in the al-‘Alawiyah area of Baghdad, wounding two mercenaries and two Iraqi civilians who happened to be in the area.  The explosion also inflicted heavy damage on one of the cars in the mercenaries’ convoy and on a number of nearby buildings.

Since 2003, the United States has made up for a shortage of occupation troops in Iraq by hiring tens of thousands of highly priced mercenaries, employees of what are known as Private Security Companies (PSCs) who guard American facilities, visiting US dignitaries, and some Iraq regime officials.  A media report issued in June 2007 estimated the number of mercenary employees of PSCs in Iraq at around 30,000, making it larger than every official military contingent in the occupation coalition, other than that of the United States.

Iraqi Defense Ministry arrests 483 in eight-day anti-al-Qa‘idah sweep in Diyala Province.

In a dispatch posted at 11:50am Baghdad time Wednesday morning, the Yaqen News Agency reported that the Iraqi Defense Ministry had announced that its forces had arrested a total of 483 people in Diyala Province in the course of its offensive there against the Sunni fundamentalist al-Qa‘idah organization – an offensive launched on Tuesday, 29 July.

Yaqen reported Muhammad al-‘Askari, spokesman for the Defense Ministry, as making the announcement.

Car bomber kills person in al-Mawsil Wednesday.

In a dispatch posted at 4:35pm Baghdad time Wednesday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a car bomber attacked an Iraqi army patrol in the middle of al-Mawsil, 420km northwest of Baghdad, on Wednesday.

Yaqen reported that the attack took place in the Dawwasah area outside the western part of al-Mawsil and that one person was killed and 10 more injured in the explosion.  One of the casualties was a soldier in the patrol.  The blast also inflicted damage on a number of restaurants in the area.

In a dispatch posted at 9:22pm Baghdad time Wednesday night, the Yaqen News Agency reported thata bomb exploded to the west of al-Basrah in southern Iraq on Wednesday.

Yaqen reported a source in the local police as saying that the bomb had been planted in the Shiqaq al-Muwaffaqiyah area to the west of the city.  Its explosion wounded one person who was later taken to hospital for treatment.
