A demonstration, a Forum and the Arrest of Tujan Faisal
=======================================================
                                                                                  Amman, March 16, 2002

Dear Friends,

Below you shall find an English summary of an Arabic report on recent
developments in Jordan.  If you wish to receive the full Arabic version,
please send an email to azar22@hotmail.com

The report includes three items:

1) The arrest of Tujan Faisal, a former member of the Jordanian parliament,
at noon today.  Mrs. Faisal was transferred to Jwaideh Prison pending trial.
The charges are not clear yet, but we think the arrest comes on the heels
of an open letter to King Abdallah that appeared on the internet last night.
In that letter, Mrs. Faisal tried to bring to the King’s attention the
financial corruption that Prime Minister Ali Abu Ragheb is wallowing in.

2) Ten to fifteen thousand people marched today from the Complex of the
Union of Professional Associations in Shmeisani in the direction of the
offices of the United Nations nearby in solidarity with the Palestinian
Intifada.  The crowd called on the Jordanian government to close off the
Zionist Embassy in Amman and condemned the defeatism of Arab regimes in the
face of the Zionist aggression on the Palestinian people.

3) The Association against Zionism and Racism will be holding a forum on
Sunday, March 17, 2002, at 6 pm to evaluate the recent Arab initiatives
concerning the Palestine question.  Speakers will include representatives of
Islamists, leftists, nationalists, as well as independent journalists and
researchers.  For more information, please call 5680775
