Jordanian Grass-Roots Petition: Add Your Signature A grass-roots Jordanian petition in support of Iraq has already collected hundreds of signatures and seems to be headed towards collecting thousands more. The petition, which emerged out of a meeting of grass-roots activists in Amman and other Jordanian cities, declares to Arabs, Muslims, and international public opinion, especially to the Jordanian government, that the majority of Jordanians stand with Iraq in total opposition to the impending attack against it by the U.S. administration. It emphasizes that the U.S. administration open declaration of its intent to appoint an American governer in Iraq, after an aggression that it is poised to undertake with or without authorization from the United Nations Security Council, represents the epitome of international terrorism and violation of international law. The petition states that the war will lead to the death of millions of fellow Iraqis and to the destruction of cities and economy of Iraq. It will also lead to the partition of Iraq in the interests of imperialist oil interests and in the interest of the Zionists, who see Iraq an impediment in the path Zionist plans in Jordan and the rest of the Arab World. Jordan, the petition says, stands to be the first loser from this war, economically, politically, and otherwise. The war on Iraq is a war on Jordan and the rest of Arabs and Muslims. If the United States and the Zionist state succeed in destroying Iraq, that is likely to put an end to the Intifada, and to extend Zionist hegemony over Jordan, especially that Zionist consider Jordan part of their territory. Thus, the petition declares:1) we are with Iraq because the United States and the Zionist state are the foremost enemy of Jordanians and the Arab people 2) we are with Iraq because our stance with Iraq is a national, religious, and a humanitarian obligation, and because Iraq is an integral part of the Arab homeland 3) we are with Iraq because the Jordanian constitution, upon which the legitimacy of the regime arises, states clearly that the Jordanian people are part of the Arab nation. The constitution is legally superior to all laws, and to the Jordanian treaty with the Zionist enemy, a treaty of surrender that our people have rejected and refused to abide by. We are with our nation. We refuse to side with the enemy. We call for annulling the treaty of Wadi Arabah. 4) We are with Iraq because the security, future, and economy of Jordan and Iraq are one and the same. On the basis of the aforementioned premises, we denounce any slogan, position, or act which implies that we are with the United States government, or which claims to take a neutral stand under the pretext of preserving Jordanian interests. Therefore, we condemn any maneuvers, exercises, or mobilization of American forces on Jordanian soil or any Arab land. In advance, we declare that we oppose any measure that allows American or Zionist forces to use our skies, waters, or lands to attack Iraq. We reject the suppression of political freedoms and the ongoing oppression in Jordan under the auspices of ultra-martial laws, so called Temporary Laws. We demand that public liberties be left alone to enable the people to express themselves in support of Iraq and in opposition to the Zionist and imperialist enemy. We condemn the arrest of activists resisting normalization in the Union of Professional Associations in Jordan. We demand their immediate release, and reaffirm our stance in support of the Intifada and against normalizing relations with the enemy. Long Live the Proud Steadfast Iraq Defeat to Imperialism and Zionism, the spearheads of international terrorism. To see a partial list of signatories, please go to the Arabic text.
