Hisham Bustani and Shadi Mdanat Arrested

Dear Friends,

Activists Dr. Hisham Bustani and Engineer Shadi Mdanat were arrested last
night (April 9, 2002) and taken to Preventive Security in Al Waebdeh.  They
are still in jail until this moment (the morning of Wednesday, April 10,
2002).  The last contact we got from them indicated that they were
intercepted and picked up by Preventive Security after they refused to allow
a search of their belongings.  It seems security were looking for a used-up
gas canister collected from the scene of a crushed demonstration.  What is
it about that particular used-up gas canister which warrants all this?  That
is not clear.  But if you read the report below on what happened on the
campus of Jordan University on April 1, 2002, you'd find a reference to
expired smoke bombs that had HEBREW writings on them.  Did Hisham and Shadi
have one of the used-up shells?  Did the regime decide that it was too much
of a media embarassment to have one of these shells exposed?  Regardless of
the answers, it is clear that the Jordanian regime, just like the rest of
them Arab regimes, has spared no human, political, or legal rights in its
quest for quelling the Arab grass-roots pro-Intifada movement.

This is NOT April's Fool's Day's joke.
This is not just a forward.
This is not a forward we got.
This is our story. A true story of what happened
today.
Date: 1st April 2002
Place: The one and only University of Jordan
Time: 11:00 a.m.
Sequence of events:
? Before we tell you what happened at the main gate
today, allow us to give you a brief idea of the usual scenario of  student
gatherings at the University of Jordan. Students would normally gather at
the clock tower. They'd head towards the administration, voice their
demands, and try to get out of the main gate, but never do. All this while
police is watching from a distance. Then everyone goes home.
- However, today THEY decided to alter their usual scenario a little bit and
this is what we (the students) got.
- The Police brutally ENTERED CAMPUS and started random assault on all
students who were present, whether participants or just passers by.
- Fearing the ARMED police, students fled and headed inwards voluntarily.
However, the police pursued them. The Police chased students into CAMPUS as
they were trying to run for safety
- Dozens of students guys and GIRLS were beaten up by the police who were
using sticks (Ganawe) and METAL HOOKS, just like the ones you see in movies.

- Several of the injured and survivors were arrested also guys and GIRLS.
- Eventually the police chose to use smoke bombs to disperse the already
dispersed gathering.
- This is where our story ends. However if you have a strong heart, and
curious to know the inhuman details, please keep on reading.
- Policemen dared to attack girls and pull off their
HEAD COVER (HIJAB) of their heads!!!
- There was an amazing coincidence of NO photographers or reporters being
there on the scene as there usually is.
- Also policemen had NO CAPS on, which legally means they are not officially
dressed!!!
- Only one ambulance was allowed to enter campus to transport injured
students.
- The police went as far as 150 meters into CAMPUS!!!
- Several members of the army special forces were spotted on the scene of
the crime.
- Five smoke bombs were used today; most of which we
managed to gather the shells. Note here that the smoke bombs were expired
and had HEBREW writings on them.
- Students' injuries varied from painful bruises to broken legs, arms and
SKULLS. Not to mention the numerous students who suffered from side effects
of smoke bombs.
- One girl whom we personally know has been PERMENANTLY PARALIZED, due to a
fatal blow on her spine.
No matter what we say here or how lengthy our report becomes, it won't
describe a small fraction of what happened today.
What we saw today on CAMPUS is perfectly normal to see on TV happening
THERE not HERE. Not in what is supposed to be a beloved peaceful sanctuary
and minaret of education. For those of you who may have any doubts of the
above PLEASE DO COME tomorrow and see for yourselves!!!!!!!!!!!
