Jordan: The Regime Escalates Arrests of Activists
As of today 12/12/2000, neither Khaled Odwan nor Issam Adnan
have been released.
In the meantime, three more people have been picked up in the
past couple of days: Ossama Hraithan (from Al Rsayfeh near Amman),
Jamil Abu Harb (in Al Karameh in the Jordan Valley), and Ibrahim
Abu Diyeh (from Al Shouneh in the Jordan Valley).
Moreover, this morning Dr. Aida Dabbass was arrested and sent to
court. She was charged with talking a crew from Al Mustaqbal
Satellite TV Station out of filming at the Safir Imperial Hotel
in Amman due to the fact that Safir Imperial was the only establishment
that agreed to host the celebration for the Zionist Embassy in Jordan
on May 15th to commemorate the anniversary of the Zionist entity.
Dr. Dabbass has been released this afternoon on bail.
Yesterday's Update:
As of this morning, December 11th, neither Khaled Odwan nor
Issam Adnan have been released from the General Intelligence
headquarters.
The three people arrested a few days ago in one of the refugee
camps around Amman for raising Hizbullah flags were released
after agreeing to sign an affidavit of compulsory sojourn for
one year. The terms of the affidavit require them to sign in
at a security station twice daily. They would have to come in
once in the morning and once in the evening everyday for one
whole year, or else they would be re-arrested.
Their charge was raising Hizbullah flags during a candlelight
sit in.
Yesterday, December 10th, Muhammad Abu Rahmeh was held up at
the headquarters of General Intelligence from morning until
dusk. He was interrogated in connection with Intifada-related
activities. Muhammad had previously been arrested on November
14th for taking part in a sit-in demanding the release of
those arrested in pro-Intifada demonstrations in October.
