Palestinians Stone Azmi Bshara at Al Baqaa Refugee Camp
=======================================================
"Israeli" Kennest Member Azmi Bshara was in for a big surprise today. After
the news spread at Al Baqaa Refugee Camp near Amman, Jordan, that al Yarmouk
Club has invited him to talk, many of the inhabitants of the camp went down
to the streets in angry protest. Consequently, the officers of al Yarmouk
Club informed Azmi Bshara that his lecture has been postponed indefinitely.
But the supporters of Hashed, the Jordanian branch of the Democratic Front
for the Liberation of Palestine, whose leader Nayyef Hawatmeh has been
meeting regularly with Zionists in defiance of Palestinian and Arab feelings
everywhere, would not have it that way. Hence, Hashed and some Arafatis
insisted that Azmi Bshara should speak anyway at Hashed's headquarters at al
Baqaa Camp at 6:30 PM as scheduled.
The camp became even more furious.
Subsequently, just as Azmi Bshara's car was trying to pass the stop light at
the entrance of Baqaa camp into the designated place, a barrage of rocks
flew from the hands of some of the protesters to hit Bshara's car.
Immediately, the driver turned around and went back right where he came
from. The lecture was cancelled after all, upon popular demand. Azmi
Bshara was not harmed, just politically shaken!
Given that al Baqaa is the largest Palestinian refugee camp in Jordan, the
largest depository of Palestinian refugees, what happened tonight has a very
special significance, not only for Azmi Bshara, but for all those who tow
his line. When the Free Arab Voice questioned some of the protesters about
the reasons for their actions, their complaints against Azmi Bshara varied
but they can be summed up in the following list:
1) Calling for a bi-national state in Palestine, which means that Palestine
is not Arab as the Palestinian National Charter states unequivocally
2) Calling for a recognition of the state of "Israel", as a preliminary
stage, or in the context of a two-state solution if the bi-national option
doesn't work out readily
3) Saying on May 28th, on Al Jazeerah Television, that the experience of
Hizbullah is not necessarily replicable in Palestine since "Israeli" public
opinion was for withdrawing from Lebanon, but not from other areas. This
implied that the main factor in the equation is "Israeli" public opinion,
not the struggle of the Lebanese resistance that FORCED "Israeli" public
opinion to want to withdraw from Lebanon. Bshara was perceived as
underestimating the resistance and elevating the importance of wooing
"Israeli" pubic opinion.
4) Azmi Bshara's record of condemning the human bombs tactic, and spreading
defeatist notions of all sorts among Palestinians
5) All of the above.
Let this be a message to all those who lost touch with the Palestinian
people, and those who think they are masters of diplomacy and pragmatism
when in fact they are nothing but opportunists and defeatists who are an
obstacle in the path of the liberation.
